– The Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce grants the GI tag.
– To obtain a GI tag for any product, one must apply in the Chennai-based GI database through the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade.
– This is under intellectual property rights, which is exclusive to Chennai only, despite being applicable throughout the country.
What is the GI tag?
– GI stands for Geographical Indication.
The GI tag is a symbol primarily given to associate a product with its region of origin.
