– A volcano is an opening or rupture in the Earth’s surface through which magma, which is hot, molten rock and semi-fluid rock fragments, as well as volcanic ash and gases, are expelled.
– In other words, a volcano is a vent or fissure (vent) on the Earth’s surface through which lava, ash, molten rocks, and gases erupt from the Earth’s interior.
– In the mantle of the Earth (one of the three layers of the Earth), there is a weak region called the asthenosphere, which contains magma.
– Volcanic hotspots are locations where tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface meet.
– There are estimated to be around a million volcanoes within the oceans, with the majority located near tectonic plates.
