– The last time a carriage was used on Republic Day was in 1984. After the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a high-security car replaced the carriage.
– However, in the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29, 2014, former President Pranab Mukherjee initiated the use of the carriage. Subsequently, Ram Nath Kovind also used it.
– After Independence, this carriage was won by India through a toss against Pakistan.
About the Carriage:
– Covered in gold, this small carriage pulled by horses, known as a “Baghgi,” originally served the Viceroy during the British Raj in India.
– In 1947, after Independence, the Governor-General’s bodyguard, now known as the President’s Bodyguard, was divided between India and Pakistan in a 2:1 ratio.
– When it was the Viceroy’s turn for the carriage, both countries began making claims.
– Ultimately, the decision was made through a toss.
– The toss for the carriage took place between Lieutenant Colonel Thakur Govind Singh, the first Commandant of the President’s Bodyguard Regiment, and Sahibzada Yakub Khan of the Pakistani Army.
– India won, and thus, the carriage became the possession of India.
Note: This Republic Day was special for this particular regiment, as the “Angarkshak” has completed 250 years of service since its establishment in 1773.
