a. Uttar Pradesh
b. Rajasthan
c. Bihar
d. Karnataka
Answer: c. Bihar
– Bihar government’s Development Commissioner, Vivek Singh, released the caste-based survey figures on October 2, 2023.
– The Bihar Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed a proposal for this survey, with all parties participating.
– Following this, the Bihar government conducted a caste-based survey in two phases.
– It has gathered data on the population of castes along with their social and economic status, although this data will be released later.
– Currently, figures for the population based on caste, religion, and class have been released.
When was the last caste survey conducted in the country?
– The first caste survey in British India took place in the year 1931.
– After this, the data of caste population was not collected in the census.
– However, in the year 2011, the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) was conducted.
– While the population census depicts the Indian population as a whole, the objective of SECC was to assess the economic and social status of castes.
– Official data from SECC has not been published yet, although its economic data has been released.
– The 2021 census has not been done yet. Many parties are demanding that caste data should be collected in this.
What are the benefits of a caste survey?
– The conditions of education, social, political and economic fields of people of different castes will be known.
– Apart from this, right policies can be brought for the people.
– In the year 1980, the biggest problem facing the Mandal Commission was regarding the number of OBCs. Because the last caste census was conducted in 1931. According to this, the OBC (Other Backward Class) population in the country was 52 percent.
– Then the Mandal Commission also gave its report to the government on the basis of the 1931 census.
– On the basis of this, 27 percent reservation for OBCs in educational and government jobs was implemented in the country.
– There is a lot of social and economic policy that will be affected by this data.
