3. India and UAE have signed an agreement to establish which system for trade in local currencies (Rupee and Dirham) instead of Dollar?

– This agreement was reached on July 15, 2023, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
– The agreement was signed between Shaktikanta Das, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the Chief of the UAE Central Bank.
– Under this agreement, the Local Currency Settlement System (LCSS) will be established to facilitate trade between the two countries in Indian Rupees and UAE Dirhams instead of US Dollars.
– India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will be integrated with UAE’s payment system called IPP.
– The governors of both countries’ banks handed over the documents of this agreement to each other.
Benefits of Trade in Indian Rupees and UAE Dirhams instead of Dollars
– In the financial year 2022-23, bilateral trade between India and the UAE amounted to $84.5 billion.
– With trade happening in Indian Rupees and UAE Dirhams, there will be no need for dollars.
– In international trade, the most widely accepted currency is the dollar. So, even India has to conduct its payments in dollars. For this, India has to arrange for dollars and maintain dollar reserves in foreign currency holdings. These dollars come from payments received from other countries during foreign investments and international trade.
– If trade occurs between India and the UAE in Rupees and Dirhams, there won’t be a need for dollars. This will strengthen the Rupee.
Integration of RuPay Switch and UAE Switch Cards
– Agreement has been reached to integrate RuPay Switch and UAE Switch.
– To facilitate bilateral financial messaging between the two countries, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Central Bank of the UAE will connect their payment messaging systems.

– The inflation rate for essential commodities is more than 8 percent, but manufacturing production is in the negative.
– Inflation is not increasing at the producer level, but it is increasing at the consumer level.
