– Additionally, they heavily rely on hunting and low-level technological agriculture for sustenance.
– PVTGs also collect non-timber forest products (NTFPs) like honey, gum, bamboo, and wax for consumption and sale.
– Due to their dietary habits, these tribes often suffer from diseases such as anemia, malaria, gastrointestinal disorders, and skin infections.
– In 1973, the Dhebar Commission established a separate category for Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs).
– In 1975, the government identified 52 tribal groups as PTGs.
– By 1993, 23 more groups were added to the list.
– In 2006, these groups were designated as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
– Currently, there are 28 lakh PVTGs related to 75 tribes in 22,544 villages across 220 districts in 18 states and union territories in India.
– As per the 2011 census, Odisha has the largest PVTG population of 866,000, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 609,000 and Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana) with 539,000.
– The largest PVTG community in Odisha is the Soura community, numbering 535,000.
What is the PM PVTGs Development Mission?
– The goal of this 24,000 crore project is to develop PVTGs.
– As part of the mission, fundamental amenities such as road and telecom connectivity, electricity, safe housing, clean drinking water and sanitation, education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood opportunities will be provided in these areas where these tribal groups reside. These areas are mostly remote, scattered, and inaccessible.
