– Among them, 28 million are victims of forced labor, and 22 million are victims of forced marriage.
– The total number of child victims among the 5 million modern slaves is 12 million.
– Modern slavery has seen a 25% increase in the past five years.
What is modern slavery?
– According to the Global Slavery Index 2023, “modern slavery” refers to situations of exploitation.
– Modern slavery takes various forms of exploitation. For example, it includes threats, violence, forced labor, forced marriage, debt bondage, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and the sale and exploitation of children.
– During this, individuals subjected to modern slavery are unable to refuse or leave work due to threats, violence, coercion, deception, or abuse of power.
– Modern slavery is destructive to individuals, communities, and societies.
– It violates human rights and undermines social cohesion. It impedes economic development and promotes corruption.
– It also contributes to conflict, terrorism, and organized crime, posing a threat to global security and stability.
The United Nations’ stance on modern slavery
– The United Nations, in its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8.7, states that immediate and effective measures should be taken to eradicate forced labor, human trafficking, the recruitment and use of child soldiers, and child labor. It aims to completely eliminate child labor by the end of 2025.

– The main reasons cited are the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, armed conflicts, and weak governance.
