7. RBI did not change the repo rate in the bi-monthly monetary policy review (December 2023), what is this repo rate?
a. 5.5%
b. 5.8%
c. 6.2%
d. 6.5%
Answer: d. 6.5%
– The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided not to increase the repo rate on December 8, 2023.
– The RBI’s MPC has kept the repo rate unchanged during the last five monetary policy reviews.
– After raising the key repo rate to 6.5% by increasing it by 250 basis points, it has been held steady in five consecutive reviews.
GDP Estimate for 2023-24
– The estimated growth rate for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the financial year 2023-24 has been revised upward from 6.5% to 7%.
– However, the projection for the average inflation rate has been maintained at 5.4%.
– A cautionary note has been provided, indicating that inflation may increase during November and December.
What is the Repo Rate?
– In simple terms, when banks lend us money, we have to pay them interest on that loan.
– Similarly, banks also need a substantial amount for their day-to-day operations, and they borrow this amount from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
– The interest rate at which the Reserve Bank collects interest from banks on this loan is called the repo rate.
How does the Repo Rate affect the common person?
– The repo rate is a powerful tool for the RBI to combat inflation.
– When inflation is too high, the RBI tries to reduce the money flow in the economy by increasing the repo rate.
– If banks have access to loans at lower interest rates, i.e., if the repo rate is low, they can offer cheaper loans to their customers.
– However, if the Reserve Bank increases the repo rate, it becomes expensive for banks to borrow, and they may pass on the higher cost to their customers by increasing loan interest rates.
Reverse Repo Rate:
– The reverse repo rate is the opposite of the repo rate.
– When banks have a significant amount left after their day-to-day operations, they deposit that amount with the Reserve Bank.
– The Reserve Bank pays them interest on this amount, and the rate at which the RBI provides interest is called the reverse repo rate.
– Monetary Policy Committee Chairman – Shaktikanta Das, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
