1. In which country, due to storm Daniel, the dam of ‘Wadi Derna’ river broke and more than 5300 people died due to floods?
a. Egypt
b. Russia
c. France
d. Libya
Answer: d. Libya
– On September 9, 2023, Cyclone Daniel hit Libya from the Mediterranean Sea, causing the rupture of two dams on the ‘Wadi Derna’ river.
– Subsequently, the cyclone’s water and millions of cubic meters of river water suddenly flowed towards the lower areas.
– This water collided with the city of Derna.
Due to this flood, more than 5,300 people in the city lost their lives.
– According to the Libyan government, 10,000 people are missing. The city’s population is approximately 89,000.
– Providing relief to this city is becoming challenging because the roads leading to the city have been destroyed or cut off due to the flood.
A quarter of the city ‘vanished.’
– Hani Shenib of the National Council on Libya-US Relations said, “About 4 square kilometers [1.5 square miles] in the city center have been completely destroyed.”
– Conditions in the Derna region are so dire that in many places, access is not possible. Hence, we can only speculate about the ground situation.
– Bodies are floating in the water in several areas. Many houses have been swept away, posing a risk of disease spread.
Libya
Capital – Tripoli
– Neighboring countries – Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Egypt
– Prime Minister – Abdul Hamid Dbeibah
– There have been two governments in this country since 2011.
– In 2011, dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed. Since then, Libya has been divided into two regions in a way.
– Different governments or administrations are working in different regions here.
– One group supports Gaddafi’s loyalists, while the other is tribal. There is ongoing conflict between both.
– The situation in Libya is being closely monitored by the UN, and some emergency plans have been made.
– However, to deliver aid there, help from other countries will be needed.
– A few months ago, after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, similar conditions emerged in Libya. First, we need to understand the ground conditions.
– The shocking death and devastation caused by Cyclone Daniel in the Mediterranean have pointed to the intensity of the storm, but it has also signaled the nation’s weakness, which has been shattered by more than a decade of turmoil and divided by rival governments, one in the east and one in the west, with the neglect of basic infrastructure in many areas.
