What are the rules for a national party?
– A party is granted the status of a national party based on fulfilling at least one of the three criteria.
– First: The party must have secured at least 6% of the total votes in four or more states.
– Second: The party must have won at least 2% of the total seats in the Lok Sabha (meaning 11 seats) from at least three states. The seats won should be from different states.
– Third: The party must have been recognized as a state party in at least four states.
Benefits of National Parties:
– National parties can secure their symbols or election signs across the country.
– National parties can have up to a maximum of 40 star campaigners in election campaigns. The travel expenses of these campaigners are not counted in the candidate’s election expenses.
– National parties in the capital city of Delhi are provided with a government bungalow on rent at subsidized rates for the party president and party office.
– During general elections, national parties are given access to broadcast and telecast bands for airing their campaigns on All India Radio and Doordarshan.
– National parties require only one proposer to file their nomination papers, while other parties require two proposers. Unrecognized parties and independents require five proposers.
Political Parties in India:
– In India, political parties have to register with the Election Commission.
– Anyone in India can contest elections and form their political party. There are a total of 2,858 parties in India.
Three types of political parties:
– Unrecognized parties: These parties are registered with the election commission, but do not have official recognition. They are usually new parties or did not receive enough votes to be designated as a regional party. There are approximately 2,796 such parties in India.
– Regional parties: These parties have been designated as state-level parties by the election commission. There are 59 such parties in India.
– National parties: These parties have been designated as national parties by the election commission.
