– On April 9, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a report on the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger.
Important statistics:
– According to the 2022 census, there has been an increase of 200 tigers compared to 2018.
– In 1973, when Project Tiger was initiated, there were only 1,800 tigers in the country.
– However, by 2006, only 1,411 tigers remained. – Therefore, in 17 years, the tiger population has increased by 2.25 times.
PM releases vision document:
– On this occasion, PM Modi also released the International Big Cat Alliance and the “Amrit Kal Ka Tiger Vision,” which outlines the goals for tiger conservation for the next 25 years.
New method for counting tigers:
– This time, modern software, cameras, and satellite imagery were used to count tigers in protected and unprotected forests and revenue lands.
– Indirect evidence of tigers was also included, such as fungus found on trees that grow after tiger urine.
Geomapping was carried out with satellite mapping.
– Two apps were used to merge the data.
– This time, even one-year-old tiger cubs were counted, whereas in previous censuses, only cubs over 18 months old were counted.
